“Little Hero, Big Heart: Trucker Becomes an Honorary Firefighter”.575
Before he even turned two, Trucker Dukes, a little boy from Maui, Hawaii, was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. His diagnosis turned a young family’s life upside down. While his father juggled the responsibilities of supporting three other children as a dedicated firefighter, Trucker embarked on a journey that took him thousands of miles from home. He traveled with his mother from the islands to New York, seeking specialized treatment and the care that could give him a fighting chance.
The weight of those trips, the sterile hospital rooms, and the constant monitoring could have been overwhelming—but Trucker’s spirit remained unbroken. Amid the stress and uncertainty, a moment of joy arrived in the most unexpected way. While staying at the Ronald McDonald House in New York, Trucker and his mom crossed paths with FDNY Captain Jim Grismer.
“I see this little boy excitedly walking towards me with his eyes aglow,” Captain Grismer recalled. “I opened my arms and he basically climbed up and hugged me around the neck. It was as if we’ve been friends—or even brothers—for years.”
That embrace, small but full of warmth, carried more than affection; it carried hope. For a moment, the worries of hospitals, treatments, and uncertainty melted away, replaced by a pure, unspoken connection. Overcome with emotion himself, Captain Grismer took Trucker and his mom on a tour of several firehouses across New York City. The boy’s eyes sparkled as he walked among the firefighters, touching the equipment, climbing into the trucks, and imagining himself as one of them.
The highlight of their visit came when Trucker was officially made an honorary firefighter. From that day forward, the FDNY welcomed the young boy and his family as if they were part of their own. Firefighters fell in love with his bright smile, his courage, and the way he approached every challenge with wide-eyed enthusiasm. Trucker’s mother wrote on Facebook, “This honor is so special to us because Trucker really thinks he's a fireman. We are so blessed to have been adopted by the FDNY. Time and time again, I have watched big, tough men fall in love with Trucker. It's really something special.”
For a little boy facing the unimaginable, the kindness and acceptance of strangers became a lifeline. For his mom, it was a reminder that even in the darkest moments, moments of joy, love, and community could shine through. Trucker may still fight a long battle with cancer, but he does so knowing that across the country, a family of firefighters has embraced him, cheering him on with every step, every procedure, and every milestone.
In a world that can often feel heavy with fear and uncertainty, Trucker’s story reminds us of the power of compassion, the magic of connection, and the extraordinary impact that simple acts of kindness can have on even the youngest, bravest souls.
